The National Hurricane Center is the official source of tropical weather predictions. They make the call on intensity every 6 hours for a storm and every 3 hours if a storm is approaching land. They also issue predictions on the likelihood of a tropical disturbance becoming a storm.
The Naval TC site. Over history, hurricanes have played a decisive role in naval battles. For example, during the revolutionary war, a hurricane roared through the Caribbean severely damaging the French Fleet and as it passed to the east of Florida, the British lost several Frigates and many structures on land as a result of the storm. For this reason, the Navy today keeps a great page on satellite imagery, links to the track and intensity forecasts and a bunch more. CIMSS. This stands for the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies. They have a wonderful page on satellite imagery all over the world as well as special focus on current storms. They also have other products that are derived from satellite imagery such as wind shear, and images detailing the amount of spin in the atmosphere. |
